“Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him.” (Matt. 5:25.)
Leon Holmes served from 2004 until 2019 as a district judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas. He has sat by designation on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and as a special justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court. Before going on the bench, he practiced law in Arkansas, litigating a broad range of civil cases, including but not limited to personal injury, premises liability, products liability, defamation, breach of contract, eminent domain, employment discrimination, insurance coverage, common-law fraud, securities fraud, and antitrust cases.
I have spent most of my adult life in litigation, either as a lawyer or as a judge. While I am convinced that our judicial system, including the jury trial, is the best judicial system in the world, I also believe that parties often are best served by settling their disputes and that sometimes they are best served by submitting their disputes to arbitration. I am honored whenever I am asked to serve as a mediator or arbitrator in a case. I pledge to be neutral and to work hard whenever I am engaged to mediate or arbitrate a dispute.
